Tilling the land for the benefit of his family is something that Abhay Singh has never regretted.

The man, who lived in Australia for a while, has not regretted moving back to Fiji to take up farming.

The 55-year-old is a recipient of the micro finance grant from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism and he used it to expand his business.

“I have 18 acres of land and on it I have planted water melon, corn, cow peas, okra, cucumber and rock melon,” he said.

Abhay said the grant came at a time when his family was beginning to pick the pieces after TC Winston.

“I am very grateful to the Government for all that they have done through this grant,” he said.

“I bought all my seedlings, and the other little resources that were needed to start my business again after the cyclone.”

With the income he has received they have been able to buy two bullocks and started a duck farm.

“All this from the initiative that the Government took in investing in us.”

Abhay encouraged similar recipients to utilise the funds well.

“When we are given grants we need to use it wisely. Don’t misuse it. Someone has chosen to invest in you.”
