Toppers Scheme ‘Way Forward’ For Fijians

National Toppers Scheme (NTS) is a way forward for all Fijians.
These were the words of TELS student, Samisoni Navatu, 23, of Rararua, Nadroga.
Mr Navatu, youngest of five siblings, had been an active rugby player of the Nadroga Under-20 and the Nadroga senior team.
He is currently pursuing a Certificate in Education in Sports Science from the Fiji National University (FNU).
He has been actively involved in sports since he was young and said he wanted to build his career in sports.
This is the first time Mr Navatu has received a scholarship to study his dream.
He completed his Year 13 in 2012 from Cuvu College in Nadroga.
Mr Navatu said the NTS scholarship drove him to help build a career since he could not afford to join the university to pursue further studies.
“Both my parents are retired and over 70 years of age,” he said.
“We have a small farm back home which draws income for the family.
“The scholarship award was a big opportunity for me to pursue my dreams and further my academics to be a professional player.
“This is my first year at FNU and I am very thankful for the Government for providing me with a scholarship in the Sports Science field,” Mr Navatu said.
He compared the Multi-Ethnic Scholarship with NTS and said the NTS scholarship was the way forward for all Fijians because it provided more opportunities.
“I think NTS scholarship is better because it does not split anyone in their race and then award their scholarship,” he said.
“As you are in Fiji you are able to apply for the scholarship and study.
“They provide scholarships for all Fijians and it is the way forward for all Fijians.”
