The much awaited state-of-the-art facility, the new Makoi Maternity Unit, opened yesterday for expecting mothers in Makoi, Nasinu.

The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Rosy Akbar, Medical Superintendent Jemesa Tudravu and the Turaga Na Tui Kalabu, Ratu Paula Nawiriwiri, opened the $6.83 million maternity unit.

More than FJ$300,000 of latest medical equipment has been bought for the new unit to ensure it provides a higher standard of maternal health care services to the population of Makoi and the neighbouring communities.

Ms Akbar said the new unit would radically improve the quality of service and infrastructure for patients and staff both in the immediate future and the years to come.

She said the new development was a reflection of the Fijian Government’s unprecedented commitment to enhance the accessibility of the basic services like health care to all our Fijians.

“Having this new Makoi Maternity Unit closer to your homes, will mean that the expectant mothers will no longer have to travel all the way to Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) to access the basic medical services,” she said.

“This new Health facility has been equipped with enhanced equipment and resources to take our services to a much higher level.

“This facility has been operating from November 27 last year, due to the demand from the community for the services.

“The services at the unit have commenced with ambulatory services that is antenatal clinic, booking clinic, and Maternal Child Health clinic.

“Birthing services will follow in four months to five months as the utilisation of services increases and our coordination of services between CWM maternity unit and the Makoi Maternity Unit strengthens. More staff will join the facility to boost the current staff we have.”
