Robust Police winger Sakeo Railoa and veteran forward Isake Katonibau will not be part of the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team for the Las Vegas and Vancouver tournaments.

This was confirmed to SUNsports by head coach Gareth Baber who however indicated that they could be given an opportunity later in the series.

“For the boys that have only been in camp for a week it would be a huge ask to come in for one week and suddenly jump into international rugby,” he said.

Baber said they produced some good stuff in the Hamilton Sevens torunament in New Zealand and they want to keep the momentum going.

“I want to create momentum in the way that we are going. There had been some player rotation happening in the squad for the first two legs of the series.”

Baber indicated that this was their way of developing the team and identifying the different types of player combination.

“We need to look at developing the squad as much as possible going into the Hong Kong 7s and Commonwealth Games as there will be pressure on us especially the players who will be playing at top level.”

He said the inclusion of new players into the training squad was to allow them to view what is going on in terms of moving forward.

“And if we are in a position where we got 26 or 27 players capable of playing international rugby then that is a big tick in the box. Something that we have been working on since last year and to get the players up to that level,” he said.

South Africa currently lead the World Sevens Series standing with 77 points ahead of New Zealand with 69 while Fiji are behind them with 62.
