Kautoga strikes Tavua’s winner

Striker Vilitati Kautoga was Tavua’s hero as they scored an upset 1-0 win over Vodafone Premier League points’ table leader Jack’s Nadi at Garvey Park yesterday.

Kautoga scored Tavua’s lone goal as the Saroj Kumar coached- side put on a sterling performance. They were strong in defence and made use of every attacking opportunity that came their way.

Tavua is the past have producted top footballers like Jone Watisoni, Josefa Masilagi, Clyde Lagilevu, Viliame Batidegei, Alfred Arapio and the list goes on.

What happened: Nadi started strongly but poor finishing from strikers Napolioni Qasevatakatini, Alfroz Ali and Patrick Joseph saw them missed several goal scoring opportunities.

Tavua goalkeeper Jovilisi Borisi worked overtime as he marshaled his defence and made brilliant saves to the disappointment of the Nadi fans.
Tavua had their scoring chances but wrong options denied them an early lead.

Halftime: Nadi 0-0 Tavua

It was almost the same story in the second half as Nadi continued to dominate possession but again were not able to find the back of the net.

In the 89th minute a lapse in concentration in the Nadi defence saw Kautoga captialised on a rebound from Nadi goalkeeper Samuela Tamanisau to rifle in the winning goal.

Comments: Tavua football coach Saroj Kumar said: “We have a very young squad and we lacked experience but the boys played above themselves today. “We did not have time to train due to the recent weather condition but when we assembled, I told them to do their best.

“The win would not have been possible without the constant support of our chief executive officer, parents and the people of Tavua.”

Nadi coach Babs Khan said: “Tavua is one of the strongest teams so we knew it was going to be tough match. They took advantage of every situation which allowed them to win.

“We have Suva next and we know they are a well-balanced team and we have to prepare well.”
