Nasinu is the biggest municipality in the country and people are still moving into the area every day.

The daily influx of people is providing the added challenge to Nasinu Town Council as it tries its best to accommodate the needs of its ratepayers.

Some of the services it provides, like rubbish collection, are outsourced to private sector operators.

One such contractor is A Kumar Transport, which has been in partnership with the council for the past nine years. He uses three of five trucks in his fleet for the Nasinu operations.

The other two are contracted to Suva City Council.

The Fiji Sun met workers from this company while clearing the rubbish at Balgovind Road, in Nadawa, last week.

Company director Elvin Kumar said: “Nasinu is a big area and rubbish piles up every day.

“We only clear green waste, kitchen garbage and other things we see on the road side.

“We have to clear the rubbish every six days in the Nasinu area.

“I’m happy to work with the council in the clearing of rubbish. And the council is doing a great job.”

He said health hazards nowadays were rife.

“We’re doing our job to make ratepayers happy all the time,’’ Mr Kumar said.

Mr Kumar said his contract was renewed every two years.

He said all the rubbish they collected was offloaded at Naboro Landfill. On a typical day, his workers would take away 10-20 tonnes of rubbish.

He said the he was thankful to the council for providing the dumpsters which makes their work easier
