The Naqere Latest were crowned the winners of the Fiji Red Cross Society Volleyball tournament after they beat Tuatua 3-2 in the final at the Fiji Sugar Corporation court in Labasa on Saturday.

The winning team consisted of youths from the Naqere settlement in Savusavu.

Fiji Red Cross Society Labasa president Senimili Maramaqaqa said Naqere walked away with $200 and a trophy while Tuatua received $100.

“The one-day tournament hosted eight teams in two pool games and it was a success,” she said.

“Occasionally there were heavy rains but we managed to conduct the tournament without any mishap.

“Our main aim of organising this tournament was to revive volleyball in Labasa and through our first tournament we have received positive responses. Now we plan to have more tournaments this year.”

Maramaqaqa said they were able to raise funds to support their February and March programme.

WAY FORWARD

In the past years Labasa has been renowned for producing strong men and women’s teams to compete in national volleyball competitions.

Maramaqaqa indicated that they are going to meet this week to discuss ways of hosting their tournaments.

Apart from Naqere all the other participating teams were from  settlements and housing estates outside Labasa.
