The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has confirmed that a permanent crossing for people living in a rural sugar cane area in Vakabuli Paipai in Lautoka would be completed by November.

FRA chief executive officer Jonathon Moore also confirmed that investigation works on the construction of the bridge would be completed by the end of next month.

In the meantime, FRA is looking at ways to reinforce the present crossing, which often washes away when there is a heavy downpour.

A resident in the area, Mohammed Faiyum, said people risk crossing the flooded creek each time the temporary crossing was put up.

“We have been facing this situation for the past three years with only a temporary bridge after Cyclone Winston completely washed away the old crossing.

“Why can’t they cement the crossing, as a temporary measure, until work on the permanent bridge begins?

“Please note that a solution is being worked out to reinforce the current crossing structure. A costing is being sought from the contractor for repair works,” Mr Moore said.

“Site investigation works are ongoing for the permanent crossing. This is expected to be completed by end of March subject to good weather conditions.

“The construction of a permanent crossing is expected to be completed by November, 2018.

“The total duration of the project is nine months.”
