The Fiji Taxi Association is concerned with the behaviour of a taxi driver who was carrying a passenger in the boot of his taxi.

It is understood the incident took place along Grantham Road in Suva on Sunday afternoon.

Association general secretary Rishi Ram said he came to know about the matter through the media and was shocked that a taxi driver would do such an act.

“As far as we are concerned, the driver was wrong and should not have done this because the driver is only allowed to carry four passengers,” Mr Ram said.

“He went the against the Third Party insurance act that only covers for four passengers depending on the type of vehicle they may have. If the vehicle is meant for four passengers, then it’s meant for four only.”

Mr Ram said it was unusual for a taxi driver to have done this because he would not be charging customers based on how many board the taxi, but on how much the taxi meter would read.

“And if an accident took place, the passengers would not be liable to any insurance claim, because the driver betrayed the third part insurance act.”

The Land Transport Authority (LTA), in an email stated that they would respond to questions on this later in the week.
