Lightning Strike Causes Unplanned Blackout

At 4:49pm yesterday the 132,000volts Wailoa to Cunningham Road, Suva, transmission line tripped, isolating the electricity supply to the Central Division of Viti Levu.

While Fiji Electricity Authority teams were in the process of restoring this power supply to the Central Division, another lightning strike on the 132,000volts transmission line from Wailoa to Vuda in the Western Division isolated electricity supply to the Western Division, thus resulting in a total Viti Levu outage.

FEA teams were in the process of energising power supply to the affected areas gradually and anticipated restoring the power supply fully to all affected areas between 9pm and 10pm yesterday.

“The authority sincerely apologises for all inconvenience caused, which is beyond our control and we are making all efforts to restore power supply at our earliest,” chief executive officer
Hasmukh Patel said in a statement.
