Gymnastics Federation Fiji (GFF) is now the new affiliate of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC).

FASANOC chief executive officer Lorraine Mar confirmed yesterday that GFF has fulfilled all the requirements in order to be affiliated.

GFF was established in Fiji in 2016 and president, Darlene Underwood said they are now focusing on their outreach programmes.

“We are involving ourselves with a lot of outreach programmes in villages, we are not in the school curriculum yet as we are to get the ministry’s approval,” she said.

“One big achievement is that establishing our strategic plan we had done in 2016 to take us to 2020. That involves more outreach programmes in gymnastics and also Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) awareness programmes.”

“We are focusing on grass root level for children from the age of three to four.”

GFF head coach Robert Yeal said the main focus was on schools as they look forward to promote gymnastics in the country.

“Gymnastics in schools is something that’s been going on for many years especially in countries like Australia, New Zealand and United Kingdom,” Yeal said.

“I was responsible in the UK for holding classes; it was actually proven that holding gymnastic classes in the curriculum improves the students’ academic work.

“Gymnastics Fiji is looking forward to promote more gymnastic sports in villages and clubs. We got villages in Serua, Galoa and Dranikula coming in and I got clubs in Suva, the Vou Dance group and in Nadi.”

The only problem for the sport now is getting people to join as coaches and encourage the younger generation.

PRESIDENTIAL MEETING

For the first time GFF has been granted the honour of hosting the FIG presidential and executive committee meeting on July 21-27.

The meeting will be held at the Pearl South Pacific Resort in Pacific Harbour and GFF will have the opportunity to showcase its clubs and programmes through visits and cultural evening.
