Airport Labasa received a refurbished fire truck on Tuesday.

The new fire tender was handed over by the Tui Macuata and Airports Fiji Ltd (AFL) Board Director, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, in Labasa.

“As the airport operator, AFL is responsible for the safety and security of the travelling public. Our six fire officers at Labasa Airport typically have two minutes to respond to an aircraft emergency at this airport,” Ratu Wiliame said.

“Thus we will ensure that our firefighters are able to reach the end of each threshold in fewer than two minutes by having facilities like the newly upgraded aircraft rescue fire fighting vehicle.”

The chief said the Labasa Airport night lights have also been upgrated AFL.

“We are awaiting certain acquisition of land that is required to overcome an obstacle to the flight path. Once this is done night flights will commence,” he said.

“There are also plans for upgrading the Labasa terminal building later this year.

“A consultant has already been engaged for upgrading the apron for aircraft and the car facilities for the public.”

Ratu Wiliame said the board is working in line with the Fijian Government’s vision to improve 15 airports and airstrips.
