The Labasa football side are now waiting for Ba after they thrashed Tavua 5-2 in the Vodafone Premier League clash at Subrail Park, yesterday.

Babasiga Lions coach Bal Sanju Reddy said there are things they need to work on before their crucial clash against Ba this week.

What happened: The hosts started strongly and never allowed Tavua to settle down. They drew first blood in the 11th minute when striker Anare Apenisa slotted in the first goal. They maintained pressure and two minutes later captain Antonio Tuivuna nodded in their second goal.

It was 3-0 in the 30th minute from Ashneel Raju’s stunner that caught Tavua goalkeeper Jovilisi Borisi napping. The visitors pulled a goal back just before halftime through Malakai Sivo.

Halftime: Tavua 1-3 Labasa

Tavua then narrowed the deficit to 3-2 when Vilive Naulalevu scored in the 49th minute.

The Babasiga Lions quickly took control and in the 69th minute Tuivuna blasted in his second goal as they extended the lead to 4-2. And again in the 76th minute, Apenisa sealed Tavua’s fate with a classic goal as they led 5-2.

Comments: Labasa coach Bal Sanju Reddy said: ‘We deserved to win this game and at the moment we have six points and I can say we are on the right path.

“There are lots of concern on our finishing, fitness and we need to get the right boots for the players so that they can play well on slippery ground. I will be working on these areas before our next match against Ba, which will be on our home ground.”

Tavua manager Mikaele Degei said: “The ground looked slippery and I think this was something that held our players back from performing to their best.

“We will try to recover as we will be facing Dreketi tomorow and we will make sure to get three points.”
