Funding boosts Pillay’s goat farm, urges others to follow

Rajendra Pillay, of Qeleqawa, in Labasa, is another success story of the Northern Development Programme (NDP).
The 53-year-old received $9999.26 and loaned $5074.28 from a bank.
“The money was for my goat farming. I work alone most of the time but I do hire labourers if necessary,” Mr Pillay said.
“I was able to build a goat shed and fence so that they don’t wander off. The grant has really helped me a lot and I am thankful for the Governments assistance.”
Mr Pillay is also into integrated farming.
“Now I have 50 goats and plan to continue increasing the number as the years go by. I am paying my loan through the sale of my vegetables. I sell watermelon, beans, peanuts, long beans and cucumber among other cash crops,” he said.
“I have been a farmer for 40 years and through farming I was able to send my children to school. Being a farmer has it’s ups and downs, but it depends on one’s willpower.
“People say they are poor but without hard work how will they not be poor?”
He urges people to work hard no matter how hard life may be.
