Mereseini Vueti, of Korovuto, in Ba, did not know that the phone call from her husband on Thursday morning would be his last.

Semi Vueti, of Vadravadra, Ba died following an accident in Nadi on Saturday night.

According to Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro the victim was transporting logs and as a result of the accident he was trapped inside the vehicle. Nearby villagers managed to pull him out.

Naisoro said the incident occurred near Tau Village, between Nadi and Nadroga. The victim was believed to have lost control of the truck he was driving causing it to veer off the road. He was rushed to the Nadi Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ms Vueti said her husband had called her on Thursday morning to inform her that he would be home the day after.

“He called me early on Thursday morning and said that he had two loads left. He would return home on Friday. When he didn’t return (on Friday) I knew he would have been busy with work,” she said.

“This morning (Sunday) when I received the call from the people he worked with, I knew right away that something was wrong. First thing I asked them: Where was my husband?

“We are still coming to terms with his passing. It’s all surreal knowing that my other half is gone.”

Ms Vueti described her husband as a kind-hearted man who never failed to take care of his family.

The deceased was also national soccer rep and represented Fiji many times in the 1980s.

“Semi sacrificed a lot for me and my son. He was a good father and the best husband a wife could ask for. Semi was very much a mentor and coach to young people here at Vadravadra village. He was in love with soccer and was always sharing his experiences while representing Fiji,” Ms Vueti said.

The road death toll stands at seven compared to 10 for the same period last year.
