The independence, confidence and safety of the blind and visually impaired adults and children across Fiji will now be enhanced.

This is after 200 canes were donated by Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji John Feakes to assist the blind and visually impaired.

“It is great to hear that the Walk with Confidence campaign will not only supply those in need with important equipment,” Mr Feakes said.

“It will also connect them with disability services and advocacy.”

He said those who received the canes yesterday would help them to walk with confidence, whether it’s at school,  work,  home, with the family or in their communities.

“We have a large development assistance programme in Fiji that we will continue to work on,” he said.

“We are pleased to provide that assistance. Everything we do is with the partnership of Fijian Government.”

He was happy to provide so many canes in one go and would be looking forward to provide more support to these communities in the future.

“I am also impressed by the number of organisations who are involved to deliver this project,” Mr Feakes said.

With funding from the Australian Government, the United Blind Persons of Fiji is working with the Fijian Government, other disabled persons organisations, schools and members of the community.

The programme is worth $11,000.
