The Ministry of Forests has noted an increase in the number of portable sawmills in the Northern Division during a recent review in its bid to control the nature of operating such sawmills.

There are 10 portable mills and eight static mills in Vanua Levu says the ministry’s timber inspector Uwate Vuravakavonu.

“Static mills means commercial facilities and portable mills are those that can be moved from one place to another,’ Mr Vuravakavonu said.

“We have been going out as a team giving advice to resource owners.

“The reason we are having a review now is because of climate change and the limited resources we have.

“The other reason is that with the new portable sawmills coming up communities are trying to venture into the sawmilling business.

“Sawmilling business is one that you have to spend a lot. They must have a budget and good financial background.”

Running a sawmill involves compliance, labour and purchasing of machines is very expensive.

“This is something many people who wish to venture into the sawmilling business do realise,” he said.

“However, if anyone has an interest to run a sawmilling business we are here to provide them with advice.

“One of the challenges that we are facing is the log supply.”

When asked which portable sawmill was the best in Vanua Levu, Mr Vuravakavonu said Vanua Levu Pallets and Sawmill Limited at Vunika in Labasa.

“In terms of sawmilling, this company is the best in compliance, production and yard management,” he said.

“They utilise all the waste and supply to private industries and local markets.”
