Waqaniceva says we should be responsible in the disposal of our rubbish

The Nasinu Town Council has stepped up its clean-up campaign after receiving complaints of clogged drains at Church Street in Nadera.

Council worker Filimoni Waqaniceva said: “It is not a good thing when people dump their rubbish in drains. When it rains, all this rubbish will collect here and cause a blockage.

“We should be responsible in the disposal of our rubbish.”

A Nadera resident, who chose to remain anonymous, said there was too much mosquitoes in this area.

“And it is because of the rubbish that has been blocking these drains,” the resident said.

“Cases of dengue fever have been increasing because of improper disposal of rubbish.

“Those people living from the top end will dump their rubbish in the drains and for us living at the bottom end we will be the ones to suffer.

“This is not a new thing. It has been like this for a long time.

“People need to work together in keeping our beautiful Fiji clean,” he added.

Meanwhile, the council has clarified information about photos posted on Facebook claiming the council had dumped rubbish on the roadside in Church Street at Nadera.

Mr Waqaniceva said the claim was incorrect.

Mr Waqaniceva said since the trucks could not directly transfer rubbish into the 90ft garbage containers they had to pour it on the ground then an excavator would transfer it to the container.

“We normally look for empty spaces like this one here at Nadera where we can transfer the rubbish to containers. These containers are then taken to Naboro,” he said.
