Part of Rakiraki Town was flooded yesterday because of heavy rain which led to the closure of the town.

The statement obtained from the Rakiraki Town Council (RTC) authorities said the town was closed at around 2pm.

They reported that the town was under two feet of water, so for public safety the town had to be closed.

When Sun News spoke to the authorities yesterday the water level had declined and they confirmed that no evacuation centres had been opened.

The RTC authorities also said areas confirmed to be flooded were Naqoro flat and the entry to town, but they were still trying to get more information on other areas in Ra.

Fiji Meteorological Services had issued a heavy rain warning in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Groups, Northern, Eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

An active trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain remains slow moving over Fiji.
