Father Peter Parlad Kumar, a priest of Anglican Archdiocese of Fiji, has been appointed Chairperson of Fiji Peace Committee.

This was confirmed during the inauguration ceremony of Fiji Peace Committee hosted by an international non-government organisation (NGO) Heavenly Culture, World Peace, and Restoration of Light (HWPL).

The gathering atttacted law experts, religious leaders, youth, women groups, and education experts. They gathered at the Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC) board room in Suva late last month.

Father Peter said: “Scriptures of each religion prohibit religious discrimination and discriminations caused by religions in the world are contrary to the teachings of each religious scripture. That’s why they should be eradicated for world peace.”

Delegates at the event took part in an inter-faith dialogue in which the topic “Discrimination in the Name of Religion’” was tabled.

It was also to celebrate World Inter-faith Harmony Week as designated by the United Nations.

The participants discussed the direction of future improvement of peace activities in Fiji.

University of South Pacific (USP) Hindu Society representative Bhagirati Bhan said: “Though we are living in a multi-cultural and multi-relation society,

“I think tolerance is still not well-known by most people.

“It will take time and I will try my best to give my contribution to help the HWPL team so that we all move toward to our mission which is to achieve world peace.”

Mr Bhan, who is attending the gathering for the fourth time, said: “I feel we are really moving forward. We had a lot of feedback today from people who know how to do peace activities.

“I will do peace activities such as holding religious youth peace camp programmes held by religious leaders to enhance awareness of importance of achieving world peace toward youth in Fiji.”
