Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Luke Daunivalu.

The Prime Minister and COP23 president, Voreqe Bainimarama, yesterday announced a change of personnel in Fiji’s COP presidency team after their successful conduct of the global climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany, last November.

Fiji’s current Chief Negotiator, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan, will resume her full-time duties as our Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva with immediate effect. And the negotiating role for the rest of our term as COP President until we hand over to Poland at COP24 in December will pass to our Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Luke Daunivalu.

“I want to thank Ambassador Shameem Khan for her immense contribution to the success of our COP campaign and look forward to her continuing to build on some of the diplomatic initiatives we have been pursuing in Geneva in the field of human rights and closer engagement with the various nations and agencies based there,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Ambassador Daunivalu is a qualified replacement and I am confident that the leadership and teamwork he will bring to the role of Chief Negotiator will strengthen our campaign for maximum ambition and maximum climate action all the way to COP24 and beyond.”
