Municipal councils will need to strengthen their roles as development partners with the national Government.

The statement was made by the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala at the launching of the fifth Fijian Local Government Forum at Albert Park in Suva yesterday.

“I have encouraged responsible and sustainable partnerships with private entities and municipal councils,” he said.

“We need to have proactive and prudent partnerships that benefit all parties.”

He encouraged the municipal leaders that the growth of our towns and cities are in their hands.

“We need to work closely with commercial entities and with agencies that promote investment and growth.

“Apart from investment in economic activities, we also need to invest in our people from the local government perspective, in areas such as civic pride and responsibilities.

“As municipal councils, we should involve and inspire our citizens in towns and cities to act responsibly in their care for public property and amenities, and particularly for the environment.” Minister Bala said.

“We play a major role in the development of this country, you all are front liners.”

Speaking to the municipal leaders, Mr Bala said: “There are also critics on Facebook.

“Let them continue what they are doing, you continue the work you are supposed to do.

“Be honest and be sincere to your rate payers and provide the best service of delivery that you can, that’s all you have to do.

“Don’t worry about Facebook, they can do whatever they want to do,” said Mr Bala.

With the theme ‘National Government’s Consistent Investment in our Towns and Cities Promoting our Townships and Her People,’ Mr Bala said, the forum would enable the municipal leaders to record and put into context the investments and strong support of the National Government to enhance local governance.

The three-day forum continues today.
