Our Fiji Airways 7s national reps are poised for another promising outing this weekend in the Las Vegas tournament on the back of their spectacular win in Hamilton.

While there is no guarantee that they will repeat the Hamilton performance, the reps seem relaxed and positive about their prospects.

They have to lift their performance to another level if they want to maintain their winning run.

The catch-up rugby they played in Hamilton may  not work in Las Vegas. They can be sure that South Africa, the competition leaders will ensure that they are not caught napping again. Australia showed in Sydney that they have the capacity to win with their new talents. Then you have the seasoned  New Zealanders who have proved that they can punish their opponents when they make mistakes.

The team that will win it, will do it on the basis of solid defence and enterprising attack. We have the firepower to register a back to back victory but it will depend on how our boys handle the pressure.

Sam Boyd Stadium is their favourite stomping ground. They won there in 2015 and 2016 and have the capability to win again in 2018.

We must win there to reaffirm  that we are back at the top as we prepare for the Commonwealth Games next month at the Gold Coast in Australia and the World Cup in San Francisco in July.

A lot is riding on captain Seremaia Tuwai. While he is still new to the role, he is surrounded by experienced campaigners like Jasa Veremalua who will need to step up to support Tuwai.

The 7s circuit is highly competitive and anyone can win on the day. Those who reach the business end of the tournament have risen above other teams in terms of their overall play. Invariably it is those teams that have shown composure and the mental edge. That’s why we have had upsets. The lowly-rated teams have beaten the fancied opposition.

Let’s all rally behind our 7s heroes and cheer them to victory. Go Fiji go.
