Suva Grammar School (SGS) will be out to improve their overall ranking in the upcoming Coca-Cola Games.

Speaking to SUNsports during their inter-house competition SGS head coach Jone Delai said the competition is a great platform to prepare for the Zone 2 meet, set for March 24.

“We have about 400 students that took part in the inter-house meet today which is a big plus for us,” the former Pacific sprint king said.

“In terms of the competition it’s getting intense because of the level of preparations from individual houses. Unfortunately, the competition was going on fine till it started raining so it caused a few disruptions to the programme. We are looking at taking 120 athletes to the zone 2 meet.”

Delai said competition at the Coca-Cola Games is tough this year especially in the 100 metres event.

“If you finish first then you automatically qualify for the finals and if you come second in the heats than you miss out.  So, the qualification time is 10.7 seconds which I feel is quite tough for the athletes.

“Last year in the Coca-Cola Games we won only four medals, two gold medals each in both the division. “ And this year we hope to move a step-up especially with our overall ranking. Actually, the inter-house is part of our preparation for zone 2 and the upcoming Coca-Cola Games as well.”

Meanwhile, SGS principal Segran Pillay said due to the bad weather they were not able to release the inter-house results yesterday.

“We had to send the students home early because of their safety and we will announce the results on Monday,” he added.
