We are willing to assist, were the words of Assistant Commissioner of Police Itendra Nair when he met with their Pacific counterparts, Kiribati Police Commissioner Ioeru Tokantetaake yesterday.

The discussion was a follow-up to the memorandum of understanding between the two disciplined forces endorsed in 2014.

The MOU covered capacity building among other key policing initiatives to be pursued focusing on how the Fiji Police Force could assist the Kiribati Police.

The Kiribati Police Commissioner Ioeru Tokantetaake said Kiribati was looking forward to more specific training assistance from the Fiji Police Force.

“I would like to sincerely thank the Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho in assisting us small Pacific island countries in training our Police officers,” Mr Tokantetaake

said.

The Fiji Police Director International Relations Senior Superintendent of Police Ulaiasi Ravula said the meeting enabled the Fiji Police to understand the needs of the Pacific counterpart and was consistent with the intentions of our Commissioner of Police in assisting our Pacific Island neighbours.

According to SSP Ravula the Fiji Police stands ready to incorporate a training package on community policing, peacekeeping duties training and on specialised areas that will best suit Kiribati Police needs.

SSP Ravula added further discussions would strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries particularly in terms of the South/South Co-operation initiatives pursued by Pacific island countries.

Kiribati High Commissioner to Fiji, Excellency Reteta Rimmon accompanied the Kiribati Police Commissioner and the meeting took place at the Fiji Police Force headquarters.
