Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar has called on opposition Members of Parliament to stop talking about prices of butter, bread and lamb chops.

She said it was more important to get into the habit of healthy eating and be champions of healthy food and promote healthy living.

“Be aware of the type of food we eat and talk to people to watch what they eat and the timing of food intake, it is difficult to change the mindset of people on what to eat,” Ms Akbar said.

She said that in Parliament yesterday the questions on the price of butter, and lamb chops were understandable, but MPs needed to be champions of healthy living.

“Let’s start it off, it begins at home, we need to be champions and let’s avoid obesity and being overweight,” Mrs Akbar said.

Opposition MP Biman Prasad said the real challenge to food and nutrition security was the cost of living.

Mr Prasad asked: “Advocacy and education is fine, but at the end of the day can the minister tell this House that it’s the high cost of living and prices of many of those nutritional items that are affecting many of our people, especially low income people?”

Ms Akbar said people must grow local because there was an abundance of land and sea resources available.

She said instead of promoting food people don’t need in their diet, they must grow local vegetables and crops by having back yard gardens.
