Dreams of being a doctor are becoming a reality for National Toppers Scholarship recipient Roshil Rohitesh Lal.

The 19-year-old is a first year Bachelor of Medicine student and has considered himself lucky after he was awarded the scholarship to study MBBS.

Mr Lal, of Talaiya, Ba, is the youngest of two siblings currently residing in Lautoka. He completed his Year 13 at Central College Lautoka in 2017.

He has always wanted to become a doctor but the family’s financial status was the only hurdle. However, when he was awarded the scholarship, he knew this was a turning point in his life.

“The NTS programme has helped me and my family in a big way that I could not even imagine,” he said.

“Before the scholarship was awarded, I knew the programme would have been very expensive for my family to afford since the MBBS programme is very costly.

“My family and I did not have the financial ability to study privately. I would not have applied until I learned that I could apply for the scholarship.

“The NTS had been a great help for my family as it took off a big burden of my tertiary education off from my parent’s shoulders.”

Mr Lal said the scholarship provided opportunities for all students regardless of their ethnicity.

“The programme has benefitted many students around the country more than before,” he said.

“NTS has done a great job ensuring the future of the country is secured and well qualified in terms of academics.”

He said NTS was the way forward for Fiji as far as education was concerned.
