The Shri Sanatan Dharam Rewa Naari Sabha yesterday celebrated International Women’s Day at Waila Nausori.

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations. During the celebration at the Waila Prem Kirtan Ramayan Mandli Temple there were more than 50 women present.

Sushila Devi Prasad, 61, a retired headteacher, said the event was celebrated across the world to honour the great women of our society.

“Empowering women was very important for bringing gender equality,” Ms Prasad said.

She said women today had equal potential provided they were trusted and valued.

“Today’s women realise their strengths and abilities and step out in order to contribute to the society and the world,” she said.

“Every women is special whether she was working at home or office or doing both. We women should cherish the blessing of being a woman.”

Sabita Gandhi, 69, president of the Poor Relief Society said it was a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of the women.

“Acknowledge women for contributing to society with their knowledge, talents and hard work, persevering without complaints,” Ms Gandhi said.

The theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Press for Progress’, which means to join hands to draw attention in your country and worldwide towards change for gender equality.

“Always believe in your rights and do not fear to be vocal and do the right thing and be yourself instead of someone else,” Ms Gandhi said.
