The Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management and Meteorological Services, Inia Seruiratu received a courtesy visit from the new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Fiji, Qian Bo.

During the visit last week, Minister Seruiratu and Ambassador Qian Bo discussed opportunities and mutual areas of cooperation on agriculture development.

Their discussion focused on possible areas to further co-operation between the two countries and to work more closely to develop the agriculture sector holistically through training programmes offered by the Chinese Government as well as working in collaboration on furthering Fiji’s Climate Change goals.

“We will work together to achieve common goals and China will continue to support Fiji,” Mr Qian said.

Mr Seruiratu acknowledged Mr Qian’s stance on agriculture as a focal area for continued cooperation with much of the Fijian Government’s efforts aimed at improving the welfare of Fijian people to effectively contribute to the country’s economic development.

“Fiji has huge potentials in its agriculture sector in view of agro-processing and for these to materialise will require the assistance of development partners, and China is a partner that Fiji looks to for relevant support in this regard,” Mr Seruiratu said.

The meeting was also attended by the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, David Kolitagane and Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Office, Meleti Bainimarama.
