The case involving the alleged murder of a nursing student has been transferred to the High Court for mention.

Tevita Vuniwai appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi yesterday charged with the murder of his wife, Amelia Baletagici Tuima.

It is alleged that Vuniwai had struck the wife with a knife at Vakamasuasua subdivision in Labasa on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.

The victim was a nursing student at the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam School of Nursing in Labasa.

Divisional Prosecuting Officer Northern, Subarmani Naidu, told the court Vuniwai had applied for bail. But they strongly objected to this because of the seriousness of the offence and that the case was of public and national interest.

He further said that according to Section 191 of criminal procedure act the case was to be transferred to the High Court.

Magistrate Tuberi said that because it was an indictable offence the case is transferred to the High Court for mention on March 23, 2018.

He then asked Vuniwai if he wanted to hire a lawyer, get Legal Aid assistance or represent himself.

He said he wanted a lawyer from the Legal Aid Commission to represent him.

Representing Vuniwai is Legal Aid lawyer Vilisoni Tuicolo. Vuniwai is further remanded in custody.
