A 64-year-old man of Wailevu Village in Macuata is grateful after he managed to escape when his house caught fire.

Kavaia Lekenaua was sleeping alone when he woke up at around 2am to see there was smoke inside the house.

“I was sleeping when I suddenly woke up and saw that there was smoke in the house. I ran outside when I realised what was happening,” Mr Lekenaua said.

“I was lucky that I woke up at the moment I did because if not it would have been a different story today.”

Mr Lekenaua said he was attached to the house, which had a lot of fond memories.

“The house was built in 1973 and it was a four- bedroom house. The total cost of the damage will be around $100,000,” he said.

“I think the fire started from the shed outside the house.”

Mr Lekenaua will for the time being stay at his son’s palce.
