A vehicle, which was chased by Police veered off-road and into the river next to the Tamavua-i-Wai settlement in Suva.

Police spokesperson Jokatama Qio confirmed the chase and said the Police Task Force team from the Totogo Police Station and the Nabua Police Station had chased the vehicle which had two robbery suspects on-board.

He said one of the suspects was arrested and kept in custody while the other was still on the run.

Mr Qio said the chase started in early hours of Wednesday morning through Suva City to Raiwaqa and towards Lami where the vehicle veered off the road from the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge into the river.

“The Police was able to arrest one of the suspects and held in custody at Totogo Police Station while the other is still on the run,” Mr Qio said.

One of the witnesses who wished to remain anonymous said they saw the vehicle go down into the river.

“I was outside my house when I heard a loud noise and saw the vehicle drive down into the river. At that time, I did not notice if there were any Police vehicles chasing the vehicle,” the witness said.

“I quickly ran outside towards the vehicle to see if anyone was in need of help, but by then, one of the people who was inside the car was arrested.”

It is alleged that the vehicle was stolen from a residence in Lokia in Nausori over the weekend and was allegedly used in robberies.

The matter was reported to the Nausori Police Station.
