Tax debate over a cup of coffee

Service Turnover Tax can only be charged by companies whose annual turnover is above $1.25million per annum.
Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stated this and challenged Opposition leader Ro Teimumu Kepa to give evidence of any coffee shop in Nausori charging the tax.
His challenge came after Ro Teimumu claimed a couple cannot afford to drink coffee in a coffee shop in Nausori after shopping.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also pointed out that the Government increased the income tax threshold to $30,000 and decreased corporate tax, and reduced duty on everyday items including food.
He said the two taxes were payable at all hotels and tourist vessels, inbound tour operators, cinema premises, hired or rental cars, excluding public transportation.
