Tavua dominates comp

Defending Tavua/Nadarivatu/Ra Secondary Schools athletics champions Tavua College retained the girls and boys titles at Garvey Park yesterday.

In the boy’s grade Tavua College scooped 13 gold medals, 12 silvers and 11 bronze to beat Penang Sangam High School who collected 10 gold, 11 silvers and 8 bronze medals.

Tavua College dominated the girl’s category with 17 gold medals, 10 silvers and 5 bronze ahead of Nakauvadra High School who managed 7 gold, 8 silvers and 4 bronze medals.

Zone president Jovesa Saqali said the performance of the athletes has improved compared to last year.

“Impressively 11 records were broken with a mix in the track and field. We are really looking forward to the nationals as these athletes want to compete against the best in the county.,”  he said.

The Best Male Athlete award was given to Ilaisa Bete of Ra High School who won a gold medal in senior boys 100m final and later broke the shot put record of 12.17m with a throw of 12.48m.

“This is outstanding and a double celebration for this Navolau student to win gold in the the blue ribbon event and claim a gold in the shot put event. We hope he does well at the Coke Games,” Saqali said.

The Best Female award was won by Reijieli Dausoko of Tavua College who clinched gold in the javelin event with a record throw of 31.91 metres.
