Joeli Bilo of Vusama Village, Nadroga, was looking forward to celebrate his 51st birthday next month.

On Friday night he was killed after a car he was driving hit a cow and collided with a van carrying 20 people, 11 adults including the driver and nine children at Natadola, near Sigatoka. The 20 are all from Naidiri Village. Thirteen are still in hospital while seven were discharged.

They were on their way back to the village from a school soccer tournament in Lomawai.

Mr Bilo’s wife, 42, said her husband was on his way to meet friends when the accident happened.

“I was looking forward to celebrate his birthday next month and preparations were underway, for this to happen. It’s just heartbreaking,” she said with tears in her eyes.

Mrs Bilo described her husband as a loving and kind man.

“Originally he is from Malomalo Village but we have chosen to stay here in Vusama because he wanted to look after my elderly father,” she added.

Mrs Bilo said her husband was the kind of person that would go out of his way to assist people.

“I am still in shock after the incident happened because we were together minutes before the accident, he always reminded me to look after our only son well,” she added.

Mrs Bilo has confirmed that funeral arrangements would be made once the autopsy was completed.

“His death has really affected our family; I was looking forward to celebrating his birthday next month.

“Even our son is really saddened after my husband’s death,” she added.
