From next year Western schools will be able to use the facilities at Churchill Park in Lautoka for free when it comes to their athletics zone meet.

This was revealed yesterday by the Minister for Local Government, Urban Development, Housing and Environment Parveen Bala, during his closing speech at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics (FSSA) Ba Zone competition.

“Not to be biased, from next year onwards Western schools can now use the Churchill Park for their athletics zone meet venue free-of-charge,” he said.

In the competition Xavier College took out the girls and boys titles.

In the girls, they claimed 17 gold medals, 14 silvers and 10 bronze ahead of Ba Sangam College who collected 7 gold, 5 silvers and 6 bronze medals.

It was all Xavier in the boys as they collected 30 gold medals, 15 silvers and 12 bronze ahead of Khalsa College who managed 7 gold, 4 silvers and 8 bronze medals.

Xavier College head coach Seraia Misimisi said their success was because of the collective efforts by teachers, parents and students.

“I’m overwhelmed, we are grateful to our administrators, our dedicated athletes, coaches and parents for the teamwork and support,” Misimisi said.

She said they’re looking forward to future competitions and would be aiming to finish in a better position compared to last year.
