Many fans of Indian folk music in Suva were treated to classy music and songs from far-flung Chattisgarh, in Central India, on Friday night.

On stage was folk band Aarug Group, part of the Namaste Pacifika programme hosted by the Indian High Commission, in Suva.

The show was held at the Jai Narayan College, on Rewa Street, Suva.

Aarug Group is a Chhattisgarhi folk music and dance group and led by actor/singer Anuj Sharma, who is a native of Chattisgarh.

The group’s repertoire comprises mainly traditional Chhattisgarhi folk music.

Those who know Indian folk music regard Aarug as a musical bouquet from Chhattisgarh which boasts selective folk songs and music.

These include some of the very popular songs which have entertained the people of India, particularly those who live in other parts of the world for many decades.

A special feature of the Aarug band is a presentation using solely traditional Chhattisgarhi musical instruments.

This is the first time Chhattisgarhi music and dance has been brought to our shores. Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal said the Aarug Group had dynamically shown how Bollywood was inspired by the folk songs.

“In the Namaste Pacifika festival, we have seen some amazing performances and shows by various groups from India who have performed around Fiji showcasing their talents,’’ Mr Sapkal said.

“We have few more events coming up this month.

“It was a great turnout. Many appreciated the folk music and dances showcased.

“The turnout was more than what we had expected. We hope that people will enjoy more upcoming shows.”
