Sustainable development, an increase in earning power and a higher standard of living are in line for the people of Vio Island with the establishment of their Mini-Grid Solar System Project.

Vio Village headman Epili Sitiveni said this would really help their village community.

“Fishing is our main source of income so now once we have electricity, we can store our catch for longer periods and be able to dictate prices by getting ready for bigger markets in Nadi and Suva,” Mr Sitiveni said.

“Also now with the reliable supply of fresh water it is really convenient for us and our families, especially when preparing our children for school every morning.”

He said these were the simple pleasures that people of the mainland took for granted but meant a lot to them.

“It also helps us improve our standard of living. especially for our children, who are coming after us. We want them to have that comfort and not face the struggles we faced when growing up.”

Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area (FLLMA) technical advisor Alifereti Tawake said their role would be equipping the villagers on meeting sustainable development criteria.

“Because this ensures that they will always have food on the table and places to fish which is important,” Mr Tawake said.

FLLMA officials concluded their three-day workshop on the island, on Friday.
