Accused admits theft, burglary charges

A 21-year-old man pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and theft charges on Tuesday in the Suva Magistrates Court.

Diki Vakalatia appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara and told the court that he was pleading guilty on his own free will. On March 16, 2018, Vakalatia allegedly broke into a Lami home by removing three louvre blades and stole an Alcatel mobile phone worth $100 and cash from the counter of the canteen, which is within the home.

Police prosecutor Corporal Walter Taito said the only item recovered was the mobile phone.

Vakalatia admitted the summary of facts, which was read out in court by Corporal Taito.

It was submitted that the accused had no previous convictions.

Accordingly Magistrate Wickramasekara convicted the accused and found him guilty on both counts. In mitigation, the accused said he was single and earned $80 per week as a farmer.

He sought the court’s forgiveness and revealed that he supported his mother. The accused will be sentenced on April 3, 2018.
