Duo handed suspended sentences

Two men were each handed a suspended sentence in the High Court in Labasa after pleading guilty to aggravated burglary and theft charges.

On the evening of February 3, 2018, the accused, Iosefo Aumaile and Rakanace Rabaro, broke into the office of RoadTech Tyres Limited in Labasa and stole about $1000 that was kept in the office.

After the incident they went on a spending spree on drinks with friends until the following day. Only $100 was recovered from them.

Justice Daniel Goundar sentenced both men to 18 months each on both counts, but suspended the sentence, saying both offenders were young and their confession to the Police and early guilty plea showed that they were genuinely remorseful.

Justice Goundar noted the accused’s previous good character, that they had accepted responsibility for their conduct and that the chances of rehabilitation was high. The court also took into account that there was no violence used. Both men were advised of the effects of breaching a suspended sentence.

Counselling was also recommended for the accused at the Medical Services Pacific for their anti-social behaviour.
