Fourteen people are homeless after their house was burned down in Wainivula Road, in Caubati, Nasinu, on Tuesday night.

The fire started at approximately 10.30pm in a wooden structure in front of a cluster of three homes and, spread through to the other two adjacent flats.

Included in the now-homesless people are three children, who watched hopelessly as the fire spread.

Home owner Vimal Prakash Sundar, 43, originally of Vunidawa, Naitasiri, who is a senior administration officer at Merchant Finance, had bought the property in 2008. He estimated the loss at $80,000.

Two of the families who are now homeless are Mr Sundar’s tenants.

He was at a Ram Naumi Pooja gathering in Nakasi on Tuesday night when the fire broke out from the ceiling of his second bedroom. He suspected it was an electrical fault.

His wife and daughter were at home asleep when the fire started.

Mr Sundar’s wife was slightly burned while trying to escape the raging fire.

He said as soon as he received news about the fire he came back home and saw his property up in flames.

As he watched helplessly, the firefighters tried to save his house and the neighbour’s house, which was partially burnt.

“I was glad that the firefighters came to help save the property but I was more concerned over the neighbour’s house, which isn’t far from mine,” Mr Sundar said.

The National Fire Authority and the Fiji Police Force are investigating the cause of the fire while Mr Sundar was trying to help his tenants find a place to live in.
