A 25-year-old man was convicted in the Suva Magistrates Court on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault.

On March 17, 2018, Waisea Sigatolu of Cunningham allegedly indecently assaulted a 35-year-old woman at the Suva Municipal Market.

He appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara and waived his right to a lawyer.

Police prosecutor Corporal Walter Taito served the accused with full phase disclosures in court before the accused said he was pleading guilty on his own free will.

The summary of facts revealed that the complainant went to use the public toilet near the bean cart at the Suva market at around 12am on March 17, 2018.

At the toilet corridor the accused approached the complainant and touched her private parts before verbal insults were exchanged between them.

Sigatolu admitted the summary of facts and the court was informed that he had no previous convictions.

Magistrate Wickramasekara convicted Sigatolu and found him guilty as charged. In mitigation, the accused submitted that he was single and worked as a carpenter, earning $230 per fortnight.

Further, the accused sought the court’s forgiveness and stated that he was supporting his grandmother in the village.

The accused was remanded in custody and the case has been adjourned to April 5, 2018, for sentencing.
