The Fiji Taxi Association (FTA) has urged its members to report incidents of theft, bullying and harassment to Police as quickly as possible.

The call has come from FTA general secretary Rishi Ram after a series of incidents this week.

Between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning near the Gaji Road roundabout in Raiwaqa, Suva, a number of youths allegedly stopped taxis and robbed drivers, taking cash and accessories from vehicles.

It is understood that once a youth flagged down a taxi others would rush in and grab cash and items from the taxi and then flee.

Some vehicles were bombarded with stones after drivers failed to stop when they were flagged down.

Mr Ram described the incidents as saddening because taxi drivers providing services to members of the public were being attacked.

He said the bullying and robberies were unacceptable.

“It is bad that some members of the public are carrying out such acts,” Mr Ram said.

“I urge all taxi drivers to lodge police reports on any incidents they may face or come across so the police are aware of it and the people responsible for such acts are taken to task.

“Drivers need to be vigilant because anything can happen to them and their passengers.

“The safety of passengers is paramount and they have to ensure that they are safe and reach their destinations.”

Police spokesperson Inspector Jokatama Qio said no reports of such incidents were lodged with them, but he urged drivers to be careful to ensure their safety as well as that of their passengers.
