People should be reminded that forests are the most biologically-diverse ecosystems on earth and, are home to more than 80 per cent of the terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects.

Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, who was the chief guest at the International Day of Forests 2018 in the Northern Division, made the statement at Katonivere ground, in Labasa, yesterday.

“This theme for the International Day of Forests 2018 is ‘Forests and Sustainable Cities (Let’s make our cities greener, healthier, happier places to live in,” Ratu Wiliame said.

“This year’s theme is most relevant because Fiji, like other island countries of the Pacific, is considered one of the most vulnerable places on earth to the impacts of climate change.

“In this regards, we (must) ensure that we properly build and enhance our capacity to adapt to this change.”

Ratu Wiliame said that Fijians must all work together to protect the forests because the forests contributed to the well-being of the people.

“We need to ensure that our forests are made more resilient through their sustainable management … that they are able to cope with the impacts of climate change and continue to provide us with the numerous products and services that are vital to our survival,” Ratu Wiliame said.

“I must emphasise that we all have a collective role to play in this regard and would like to encourage everyone to celebrate International Day of Forests and to remember the importance of forests to our island of Vanua Levu, to Fiji and to our planet.”

Last year’s theme for the International Day of Forests was “Forests and Energy”.
