Swimmers Step Up Prep

Three local swimmers are undergoing their final phase of training at Griffith University, Queensland as they prepare for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on April 4-15.
Matelita Buadromo, Taichi Vakasama and Herbert Rabua and head coach Sharon Smith left the country last Sunday for the intensive build up.
Fiji Swimming president Ben Rova said they have high hopes the swimmers will qualify for the second round of competition.
“The swimmers have given their best during training,”Rova said.
“We hope they qualify for the second round and better their personal records. That’s what we are expecting.”
The swimmers were also fortunate to secure the services of Australian swimming coach Michael Bohl last month.
He took them for a few sessions working on skills, drills, starts and turns.
Smith was earlier impressed with the level of preparation for the team.
“We have gone up another level in our preparation.
“Cheyenne Rova and Paul Elaisa are training in the United States and they are doing well,” Smith said.
Rova and Buadromo competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Rova’s highest individual finish came in the 50m backstroke where she was 20th in the heats while Buadromo found herself ranked 19th after the 200m individual medley heats.
