Elina Kaufusi Bloomfield, 52,  from Tonga, is the first from her family to graduate with a Doctor of Philosophy.

And, her first reaction on graduation day was to thank God for helping her achieve her target.

She is one of six siblings.

She is not the first in the family to graduate from university but she is the first to get a PhD.

“I graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Geography.” Ms Bloomfield said.

She said that her father witnessed her graduate but her mother could not make it all the way from Tonga.

She was so happy to see her father because he was 87-years-old and was able to attend her graduation yesterday.

“I am a wife, a mother to five girls and a grandmother to two grandsons,” she said during her speech to the University of the South Pacific graduation ceremony.

“My parents did not complete high school but I am so fortunate that they value education and realised the importance of investing in it.”

She said that her parents’ advice to her was greatest motivation throughout her journey, which was “Trust in God and never forget who you are”.

She is a proud alumni of the prestigious Tonga High School.
