Staff members of the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay in Nadi for the first time joined millions of people worldwide to mark Earth Hour on Saturday.

Lights were dimmed for an hour at the five-star resort and candles were lit to mark the event.

The resort’s acting general manager, Achim Herterich, said it was an honour for them to be part of an event that was celebrated globally.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by World Wide Fund for Nature, which is held annually throughout the world encouraging individuals, communities and businesses to turn off essential electric lights for an hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30pm as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

“The whole idea behind Earth Hour is we are trying to preserve energy and stop the whole heating for the earth, the melting of the polar and it’s the contribution to the environment by shutting down our lights which is what the world is doing,” Mr Herterich said.

“For us it’s very important we are part of this procedure because for us it is also the idea of not just giving back to our community or our guests, we also want to give back to the environment, as we are living a footprint in the environment we try to keep it as small as possible.”

He feels their participation will showcase to the world that they have the same kind of thinking pattern by doing something for the environment.

“It may not sound a lot but when it’s put into proportion it’s massive. That energy that is saved within this one hour around the world is huge,” Mr Herterich said.
