Suva Muslim College yesterday was the only school that scooped two top awards during the Fiji Muslim League National Finals at Nadi Muslim College.

They were Year 11 student, Sayed Ahsan who won the top award for Urdu English Oratory and Year 10 student, Zakira Bibi both who won the top award for Quran Tilawaat from the senior division.

Apart from that, the national runner-up for Urdu Impromptu Competition 2018 was also given to Year 10 student Sidra Qadri, of Suva Muslim College.

Sayed thanked teachers for their sacrifice in preparing him and his two colleagues for the competition.

“I was honoured to be given the chance to raise my voice on an issue affecting our country and the world too, which is the pollution of the environment and ways in which we can combat it,” he said.

“We live in a democratic country and people should learn to make use of this opportunity to raise awareness on issues affecting us.”

Zakira said she was blessed to be given the opportunity to recite verses from the Quran in Arabic.

She won top prize in the Quran Tilawaat where students were given verses from the Quran to recite in Arabic.

“As we all know that Arabic is a kind of language that you need to master well if you want to speak it, thanks to my school through the Fatima Girls Hostel I was able to learn Arabic,” she said.

“I believe that learning the Holy Book is very important because it will direct us to the right path in life.”

School teacher Amin Khan said it was a proud moment for their school to see their students win awards.

“They are hardworking students, they have sacrificed so much to be part of this competition and we are going back to Suva with top awards,” he said.
