Frances Wainiqolo did not expect to pass her Year 10 examination with flying colours after she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB) early last year.

Frances, 16, from Kasavu, in Savusavu, is the eldest of five siblings.

She is now a Year 11 student at Adi Cakobau School, in Sawani, Naitasiri.

She was among TB survivors who were awarded with a TB Champ certificate during the End TB Concert 2018 at Ratu Sukuna Park, in Suva, on Saturday.

Because of her TB infection, she was admitted to Suva’s Colonial War Memorial Hospital for over a month.

This meant missing classes and no notes to refer to help her study for her examination.

She scored 525 marks out of a possible 600.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body.

This can happen when you come into close contact someone with the untreated, active form of tuberculosis through coughing, speaking, sneezing, spitting, laughing or singing.

Frances said she struggled to cope with school work.

“I was very nervous and doubted that I would get good marks in the exam,’’ Frances said.

“When we got the results, my family and I were all shocked.

“Although coping up with academics was hard, I worked even harder to ensure I make my parents proud despite being on medications and regular check-ups for another six months after I was discharged from the hospital.

“It was my teachers and friends who helped me with everything that I had missed out on for a month and half.’’
