Sevens maestro Waisale Serevi has placed his money on Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens team to claim their first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Serevi jetted into the country yesterday and was pleased with the team named by head coach Gareth Baber.

“I believe we’ve a good team to win the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“The thing I have seen is that it’s not only the seven but the whole 12 players which will be difficult to select from. It will be a headache for Gareth (Baber) to decide on who will play in Hong Kong and the Commonwealth Games.

“They have a great chance in the Commonwealth Games to win the gold medal since they have been doing well. They are peaking at the right time and they have won two tournaments this year in Hamilton and Vancouver.”

However, Serevi said the mistakes made in Las Vegas against USA in the Cup quarterfinal should be a learning curve.

“They have learned a lot. They have a perfect team no doubt in my mind. They are the favourites at the moment because the way they play on the field. I am saying all along if you have twelve good players you have the opportunity to win tournaments because the depth in the Fiji 7s team is high.

“If one player comes out and the one goes in, is better than the one that plays, that’s the key we have.”

Serevi said Fiji have the edge at the moment as they have been playing for the last year or so.

“They are coming together and the chance to win the gold medal is there. I’m looking forward for Fiji to win that gold medal that has been eluding us in the last couple of Commonwealth Games.”

The Fijians are the top seed for Pool C alongside Wales, Uganda and Sri Lanka. The sevens competition is set for April 14-15.
